What are Medium-Heavy SZ Steel Sheet Piles?

Typical sizes of medium-heavy steel sheet piles in the United States and elsewhere are SZ-14, SZ-14.5RU, SZ-18, etc. The foundation's ability to resist settlement, overturning, and sliding forces acting on the piles is a complex engineering assessment. Concentrated dead loads should be incorporated into the internal and external stability design, using a simplified uniform vertical distribution (two vertical directions to one horizontal direction) to determine the variation of the SZ-14 vertical stress component within the reinforced soil with depth. Therefore, site investigations and analysis should be performed by professional engineers. Contech Marine Bin-Walls are ideal for freshwater dock construction.

Depending on the size and location of the concentrated dead loads, the boundary between the active and resisting zones may need to be adjusted. When a traffic barrier is placed on top of an MSE wall, it should be constructed with an SZ-14.5RU support plate designed to resist overturning due to the design horizontal impact loads applied to the barrier. Lowering a steel box into water and then filling it with SZ-18 granular material (1/4 inch to 6 inches) creates a heavier structure to resist overturning, sliding, or ice uplift. For fill material less than 1/4 inch, geotextiles must be used to prevent the loss of SZ-20 fill. How is the concentrated horizontal dead load distributed within and behind the reinforced soil mass?

Medium-duty cold-formed steel sheet piles can be constructed using SZ-20, SZ-21, and SZ-22 steel sections. Floating scaffolding should be suspended from an elevated support by ropes and consist of a sturdy platform with diagonal bracing below, securely fastened to two parallel supports at right angles to the span. Traffic loads should be considered according to the criteria outlined in Section 5.5.5.10.5. Traffic loads should be positioned to maximize their effects. Contech Marine box walls are constructed from prefabricated steel members bolted together to form a closed box. These boxes utilize SZ-22 steel and are filled with granular material (1/4 to 6 inches) to provide a durable and strong structure.
