How are Steel Sheet Piles Inspected?

Steel sheet piles are generally inspected for material and appearance. This allows for correction of substandard sheet piles to reduce difficulties during the piling process.

Appearance Inspection

Appearance inspection includes inspections of surface defects, length, width, thickness, end squareness, straightness, and interlocking shape. Important Notes:

1. Weldings that could affect sheet pile driving should be removed.

2. Cut holes and incomplete cross-sections should be reinforced.

3. If the sheet pile is severely corroded, the actual cross-sectional thickness should be measured. In principle, all sheet piles should undergo an appearance quality inspection.

Material Inspection

Material inspection involves comprehensive testing of the chemical composition and mechanical properties of the steel sheet pile base material. This includes chemical composition analysis of the steel, tensile and flexural tests of the component, interlocking strength tests, and elongation tests.

Each standard steel sheet pile shall be subjected to at least one tensile and bending test; two specimen tests shall be carried out for every 20-50t weight of steel sheet pile.
