What are the Advantages of Steel Sheet Piles?

Before we describe the advantages of steel sheet piles, we must answer the question, "What is a steel sheet pile?" In most construction scenarios, a steel sheet pile is made of steel. It is a hot-rolled steel sheet profile connected to other such sheets via interlocking clutches. When driven into the ground and locked together, these strong yet resilient sections form a section of a steel sheet pile wall. Steel sheet piles securely retain soil, water, or seawater on one side, protecting physical assets on the other side, whether property, land, infrastructure, or people. They can be used in this manner for permanent lateral soil or water retention, or temporarily to hold these forces, removing them when the installed sheet piles have served their purpose. Steel sheet piles provide efficient and effective excavation support for construction projects. The following are the advantages of steel sheet piles:

1. Steel Sheet Piles vs. Concrete

Steel sheet piles are generally a more cost-effective solution than concrete piles, regardless of whether continuous or spliced concrete walls are being considered. Project costs also accumulate due to delays, with mixing and setting concrete being a prime example, whereas steel sheet piles are "ready-to-place."

2. The Lifespan of Steel Sheet Piles

Longevity should be the holy grail of any project, and if used as a permanent solution, this is exactly what steel sheet piles offer. Due to the corrosion-resistant properties of steel, protective coatings, and accompanying design considerations (such as sacrificial thickness), their lifespan can span decades. Requiring minimal maintenance, steel sheet piles are both invisible and inconspicuous, eliminating any concerns that may arise when using alternative earthwork methods.

3. Community-Friendly Steel Sheet Piles

Many companies seek to minimize their impact on residential communities and other commercial businesses, but noise pollution can be a real problem and source of complaints, even in areas not considered "environmentally sensitive." By using silent and vibration-free steel sheet pile installation methods and "press-in" methods, public image and reputation can be maintained, corporate social responsibility can be demonstrated, and ESG requirements can be met, benefiting all stakeholders.

4. Environmentally Friendly Sheet Piles

With global awareness of ecological issues increasing significantly, steel sheet piles, with their reuse-recycle-reduce ethos, are becoming a more environmentally friendly option. Temporary steel sheet piles can be removed when no longer needed and reused multiple times across multiple projects without losing their integrity. When the time comes, they are fully recyclable, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of many different projects. They are the "heroes" of the circular economy. Furthermore, virtually no spoil is generated during the installation of steel sheet piles. Minimal soil disturbance benefits biodiversity and nature.

5. Quality Assurance

Steel sheet piles offer stability and strength, and when supplied by leading manufacturers, they come with the quality assurance ingrained in their hot-rolled steel manufacturing process. The peace of mind of knowing that the steel sheet piles have been rigorously tested and passed all stringent quality controls before leaving the factory is absolutely invaluable and provides tremendous confidence.

6. Installation in All Ground Conditions

Steel sheets can be installed in all ground conditions, even hard and rocky ones. If the ground proves problematic, the soil loosening process is easily implemented.

7. Waterproof Structure

Using the Larsson-type interlocking device, interlocking steel sheet piles provide an effective waterproof barrier, preventing water ingress in a variety of environments, even marine ones. Resistance to water pressure is second nature to steel sheet piles.

8. Temporary or Permanent - Your Choice

Because sheet piles are just as easy to extract and install as they are to place into the ground, there's no need to keep a structure in place until it's no longer needed for its intended purpose. If permanent installation isn't necessary, the temporary nature of sheet piles can make them a very useful ally.

9. Size, Shape, and Grade Selection

Sheet piles aren't a one-size-fits-all option; instead, they're available in a variety of lengths, shapes, cross-sectional sizes, and steel grades, allowing them to be optimized for project design and specific requirements. With the option to use some piles in oversized sheet pile walls, there's plenty of room for improvement in any project.

10. Anchoring and Supporting

By anchoring and supporting a sheet pile wall, you gain the advantage of managing higher retention heights than you might have imagined. This option allows for increased control over the foundation work being performed, significantly impacting the approach and potentially saving substantial financial savings.
