Z-shaped steel sheet piles have a large section modulus (W = 1200-5015 cm³/m) and are suitable for large, medium, and small projects subjected to high soil (or water) pressure. Due to the characteristics of steel sheet piles, they are typically driven in groups of two. While the construction process is somewhat lengthy and technically challenging, the width of a two-pile group can reach 1160-1400 mm, approximately two to three times the width of a single U-shaped steel sheet pile. This improves overall construction efficiency. Therefore, steel sheet piles are widely used in many wharf projects in my country that require limited land area. The construction method typically involves "vibration piling followed by hammering."
The most fundamental mechanical properties of steel sheet piles are web continuity and symmetrical distribution of the joints at predetermined locations on both sides of the neutral axis. These two characteristics positively impact the section modulus of cold-rolled steel sheet piles.
Z-shaped steel sheet piles have the following advantages:
1. Flexible design with a high section modulus and mass ratio;
2. Increased section moment of inertia improves the overall bending stiffness of the pile wall, effectively reducing displacement and deformation;
3. The use of high-strength steel significantly enhances the bending strength of the steel sheet pile wall;
4. The increased section width reduces the amount of interlocking in the steel sheet pile wall, directly improving the water-stopping performance of the steel sheet pile wall.
