Purpose of Steel Sheet Piles

Steel sheet piles use interlocking steel sheets to stabilize the soil and can be installed using vibratory and non-vibratory installation equipment.

1. Common Uses

1) Providing support excavation services for underground parking lots, basements, pump rooms, foundations, etc.

2) Constructing cofferdams

3) Constructing seawalls and breakwaters

4) Setting up barriers to impede groundwater flow

2. Process

Steel sheet piles are installed sequentially along the planned excavation perimeter or seawall direction to the design depth. The interlocking steel sheet piles form a wall to provide permanent or temporary lateral soil support and reduce groundwater infiltration. If necessary, anchor bolts or internal bracing can be added to provide additional lateral support.

Cold-rolled steel sheet piles have poorer waterproofing performance but may be more economical and readily available. Hot-rolled steel sheet piles are more traditional and offer better waterproofing performance. Interlocking sealants can be added to all types of steel sheet piles to reduce permeability.

3. Advantages

1) Steel sheet piles are recyclable and reusable.

2) Steel sheet piles are available in a wide variety of lengths, sizes, and steel types.

3) They can be used for both temporary and permanent structures.

4) Installation can be performed quietly and without vibration.

5) Construction is clean and efficient, generating no waste. On-site supervision is reduced, and storage space requirements are minimal.

6) Compared to diaphragm walls or interlocking walls, steel sheet piles offer lower installation costs and faster installation speeds.

7) Cofferdams can be constructed in almost any desired shape, but for practicality and cost-effectiveness, most cofferdams are rectangular or circular.

8) Steel sheet piles form tight joints, creating an effective water seal.

9) Steel sheet piles have a long service life both above and below water, making them ideal for marine and coastal engineering projects.

10) Anchored steel sheet pile walls offer greater installation flexibility.
