All LSP steel sheet piles are most popular in Japan and some Asian countries, particularly types LSP-1, LSP-2, LSP-2N, LSP-3A, LSP-3B, LSP-3C, LSP-3D, and LSP-5. If the resistance generated by these factors is sufficient to counteract the longitudinal shear force, the pile will exhibit its full section modulus. Driving the steel sheet piles with an impact hammer places less load on the seal because the movement occurs only in one direction. LSP-1, LSP-2N, and LSP-3A are all fully coated using the same paint and thickness.
However, in some cases, it is recommended to join the inner and outer wall panels together by crimping or welding to ensure the necessary longitudinal shear resistance. Lightweight steel sheet piles are subject to greater loads due to friction and the resulting temperature rise.
All steel sheet piles are painted in a Chinese factory. Rocky or hard ground prevented the piles from being buried deeper than the designed depth. During installation, some sheet piles were found to have discolored and damaged paint. The permeability of the joints in the sheet pile walls can be assessed according to DIN EN 12063, Annex E. Therefore, Arcelor applied an additional layer of Jotun PU coating over the original Jotamastic coating to ensure that the gray color maintains its final RAL color throughout the designed length. The piles support open water or very soft clay and silt. For multiple piles, the interlocking devices are factory-welded, meaning only the remaining interlocking devices between the sheet pile groups require on-site welding.
Rubber or plastic ropes and caulking compounds with expansion and setting properties can also be used. The lightweight steel sheet pile interlocking devices are lubricated. All products for this project were delivered in March 2008. The sheet pile walls can also be sealed using hammered-in wooden wedges, which expand when exposed to water. The piles are cantilevered. Additional interlocking devices were included in the delivery to ensure that Geka Bouw BV could fabricate them on-site in the event of turns or obstacles that require changes to the route, without delaying the project. These joints must be clean and dry before welding. The above requirements are met when the interlocking device provides complete waterproofing protection for LSP-3B, LSP-3C, LSP-3D, and LSP-5 steel sheet pile walls.
