The standard length of steel sheet piles depends on the procurement method (purchasing from supplier stock versus custom-ordering specific lengths from the mill) and the manufacturing process (hot-rolled or cold-formed).
1. Standard Stock Lengths
1) When purchased from stockyards, steel sheet piles are typically stocked in standard metric lengths to facilitate transport and handling.
2) The most common standard stock lengths are 6 m, 9 m, 12 m, 15 m, and 18 m.
2. Hot-Rolled Steel Sheet Piles (Custom Mill Lengths)
Hot-rolled steel sheet piles can be custom-ordered from the mill to specific project specifications, eliminating the need for on-site splicing.
1) Maximum standard rolling length: For most large steel mills, the maximum standard rolling length for hot-rolled sections is 32 m (105 ft).
2) Extra-long specifications: For special applications, some manufacturers can produce single-piece lengths of up to 130 ft (approximately 39.6 m).
3) For standard steel sheet pile walls, the recommended maximum driving length is typically 30 m.
3. Cold-Formed Steel Sheet Piles
1) Cold-formed steel sheet piles are manufactured by passing steel coils through a series of forming rollers.
2) Common supply specifications mirror those of hot-rolled piles, with standard stock lengths ranging from 6 m to 18 m.
3) Due to manufacturing and handling constraints, the maximum length for cold-formed steel sheet piles is usually limited to 24 m (approximately 80 ft).
4. Practical Limitations
Although mills are capable of rolling steel sheet piles up to 32 m or longer, standard stock specifications typically top out at 18 m. Delivering piles exceeding standard stock lengths often requires special transport arrangements and permits for oversized loads. Consequently, if a project requires piles longer than 18 m, contractors typically splice (weld) two standard-length piles together on-site to achieve the required length.
